I am really wanting to grow our following.. i feel that the areas we should be strong in are from hattiesburg to jackson and some north of there.. also east to mobile, possibly beyond maybe to pensacola and further into the panhandle..
one thing about these areas is that there is no reef club for them.. louisiana is covered.. somewhere north of jackson people fall into the TN clubs.. and northern alabama is pretty well established.. when you get to the panhandle there is a club down that way also atlanta has a pretty big club..
one thing i do not want to do is end up with a bad rep.. we do not need to go on other sites soliciting our site.. so be careful about what we mention on other sites..
my main goal is to get along with all the other clubs.. and possibly support and recieve support from them..
How do we let these people know there is a place where they can hang out???
any ideas let me know..

I'm growing corals fast as I can , i would to to see a local network of reefers built for supporting each other. Swap stock , emergency housing of stock, help set up tanks, for when several people and resources are needed. I have met new people in reeding and enjoy swapping information ideas or even help when the need arises. But our local networking is lacking, I believe some good ole elbow grease and some help showing up when needed would go a long way and inspire them to chip in and help someone else. Myself jerrod and Charles had a mini frag swap and a day at the saltwater store that was a blast. We got to visit most of the day, if one of them were to need a hand I would help anyway I can, muscle, trailer ,house livestock, frags whatever. A little local help , eyes over your shoulder helping you avoid pitfalls , swapping ideas is invaluable in this hobby. But meeting and greeting , helping move a tank , run pipe ,whatever is what will help us get the word out and use this board to assist them having somewhere to find us when they hear about what we do as local reefers and have a place to be found when we as individuals role up our sleeves to help the guy or gal at the LFS. Sounds like Reese has a good cover on the ideas, i completely agree with these. My question is what happened to many of the old members from the old mississippi reef site? Surely they are still here? I can imagine that advertising in the LFS's around will help tremendously with getting people to take notice.

I agree reese.. the best thing we can do is interact.. to give of ourselve even if it costs us a little... the thing is how do we get to these people that need help.. how do we get our name in front of em.. we are working on getting with JFC to let us put flyers or something in his store.. but his may not fly.. i dunno how he would feel about that.. facebook is a good way to network.. everyone go to www.facebook.com/mississippireeferssociety and like the page.. then share it however you can.. this should network it out well.. really looking forward to seeing this become a happening site...

why do we want to extend our presence..
we are talking about extending our presence... not for the sake of traffic, advertising, or anything else monetary.. my number one goal is to share what i have learned.. i truly hope that i can help someone not make a mistake that i have made.. and goodness i have made mistakes.. like reese said, being there for someone is a huge thing..
to me reefing has become so much more that gluing animals to rocks in a glass box.. i love the interaction.. i love the fellowship of like minded people.. and thru sites like this we can make our group bigger and bigger and possibly work in some percs for having a large following.. companies like brs really like being a part of these sites because it gets people on their site, and them being here would give us discounts.. Group buys, grow outs, shared shipping.. all of these are percs of having a forum of like minded people to go to..
Another biggie to me is how much our hobby is ripping reefs apart across the world.. if i said something like 9 out of 10 fish that are gathered die before they get to wholesale would you believe me?? well believe it.. i also believe its an under estimate.. corals are the same way.. alot of corals from the wild just wont survive in captivity.. and 9 out 10 as a statistic gets even worse when you consider how much we lose in our home aquaria, but among us we can find animals that do survive well and share them.. together we can help each other not have as much loss when buying livestock and not cause as much damage to reefs in general.. if we share how we control disease in our tanks, how to treat disease, how to spot disease.. etc..think of how much this would help..
this was a long post and a kind of "what i think" on some things.. please feel free to discus..

The reef hobby is wiping out anemones in the wild. I read on Wikipedia that a normal life span of an anemone is over 100 years. Whereas is a home aquarium it lasts 6 months on average. The wild anemone population is being collected at a much higher rate than it is replenishing.

Just one reason I feel responsible for doing the right thing when it comes to sourcing animals and keeping animals.
That may very well fall in our laps as being our fault.

Welp just do like Reese did and hang out at Jackson Fish And Coral. That's the only reason I knew to give this site another shot. I was on the old site, but glad there's a new one. I will put some pictures of my tank on here soon and introduce myself. Also just got approval from the misses on a 40 breeder tank for our sitting room! So some much needed advice, and cheaper ways to do things is needed. Thanks
